Building Energy Benchmarking for LL97 Compliance
New York City Benchmarking Law in Local Law 84 mandates that large buildings over 25,000 square feet must annually measure water and energy consumption. This increases the building’s transparency in an effort to increase sustainability to comply with these new laws. The process is called benchmarking. Yearly Energy Star Energy Efficiency Scores
The law requires building owners to submit their usage data through an online benchmarking tool hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency. Building owners have until May 1 each year to enter this data. The building is graded based on Energy Star energy efficiency scores:
- A – equal to or greater than 85
- B – equal to or greater than 70 but less than 85
- C – equal to or greater than 55 but less than 70
- D – less than 55
- F – building did not submit required benchmarking information
- N – building is exempt from benchmarking or not covered by the Energy Star program
The energy label that the law requires to be publicly posted on each building will include the relevant letter grade and the building’s energy efficiency score.
